To be stylish (like I look in my dreams), you need to consider not just your outfit, but also your hair, makeup, and accessories. As a more casual mom, I usually try to dress for comfort, but I also want to look good. I mean, come on! Who wants to go out for a while and see people they know when you have just thrown on something and you don’t feel like you look your best? Don’t we all say or hear people apologize for their looks? To be honest, no one else really cares that you look all jacked up. LOL. Well, the gossips do. Considering this though, you should make at least a small amount of effort when you go out. Honestly, that’s what I tell my daughters when they leave the house! First impressions and all, right? Maybe some days you just don’t care about how you look! That’s OK too, but let’s take a look at some things to consider when we are going somewhere casual for the day.
Tops and Bottoms – can make you look like a dumpster, casual like you planned it, or maybe like you are trying too hard!
I like to go for the middle ground. A little bit casual and a little bit planned out. Wear a solid-tee shirt with printed pants or a printed shirt with solid pants. Dangerous, right? LOL. Far from it! I think most of us pick outfits in the fastest way possible because of our busy schedules. We at least want our outfits to match! That might be the only criteria we have. Well, remember…this website is a little bit me and a little bit what I think I look like in my dreams. More like what I WANT to look like. That’s why taking a little time to plan out your outfits for the week is so beneficial. It saves you time and allows you to pair up the best tops and bottoms from your closet so you don’t really look thrown together.
Makeup – ditto! Look up at the last title. Makeup can also make you look like a dumpster, casual like you planned it, or maybe like you are trying too hard!
Some ladies don’t like any makeup, some like a little to look a bit more refreshed, and some bake a cake on their face! I am more of a light makeup girl no matter what. Just make it last all day and keep those eyes popping and you can match any makeup to your outfit. Save your cake baking face for when you have a photoshoot. Aim for a light, natural look that covers the imperfections, but you still look like yourself. I think it is crazy to see a woman who wears so much makeup that you cannot even see her real features. Hey now, no judgments here! I am not saying to cover up what you don’t want people to see! I am just saying that if you can, try to wear a better type of makeup that looks natural. If it takes you more than 10-15 minutes to put on makeup, maybe you need better makeup!
Hair – ditto, ditto! Look at the last 2 titles!
Hair can make you or break you. As I tell my daughters, at least go out of the house looking like you washed that hair recently! If you have longer hair, at least smooth out the lumps on your head! Short hair? Wet that cowlick down so you don’t look like Alfalfa. Throw a hat on? Sure…as long as it matches your outfit style. I’m cool with hats so you don’t have to fix your hair unless you have short hair and ears that stick out as I do. I don’t do hats! Some people just shouldn’t and I am one of those.
Long hairstyles – throw it up in a clip or fancy ponytail and you can look casual and keep it out of your face all at the same time. It gets hot here in the South for the summer, so we ladies tend to pull up our hair as much as possible. I tell my girls all the time to at least blow-dry their hair. It looks so much better and more stylish when they don’t air dry.
Mid-length hairstyles – flat iron and hair dry hair to give it a fresh, smooth look. Pin it back in a cute way! A lot of women have mid-length hair that is frizzy. Put a little product in the hair and flat iron it a little to get the frizz out. There is nothing worse than hair that looks like you were struck by lightning. (Insert my high school senior picture here! LOL. Wish I would have read this back then.)
Short hairstyles – Love me some pixie cuts!! I used to think only old women had short hairstyles and now that I have had a short style for several years, I will NEVER go back! If I ever say I will, please remind me not to! It takes 5 minutes to do the hair. Maybe wet it a little with a spray bottle, but most of the time I just turn the melon over and blow dry it for a second upside down to give it a little volume. Then I use the hot air to style my locks into place! Voila! Hairspray and go!
Curly hairstyles – I can’t help you much here except to say that if you have curly hair, don’t let it frizz. Put some product in that mop so it doesn’t look like you have a Llama on your head. **Disclaimer, just saying this because I have naturally curly hair. This is why I cut it. Curly ladies that know what they are doing are awesome! My curly hair, on the other hand, likes to think it is raining every day and sticks out like I stuck my finger in a light socket.
Accessories – can make or break your style! Throw on some stylish sunglasses, some jewelry, and pair it with a great bag!
Y’all! I don’t know if it’s a southern thang or not, but mama always said to dress up my face. Earrings bring the eye level up. Necklaces bring the eye level to the middle. Long necklaces bring the eyes down, but short ones bring them up. Belts can make your waist look slimmer if used in the correct fashion, and bracelets add a little flair. All of this paired with a perfect bag just sets the style! There is nothing worse than having a perfect outfit with that ugly bag or purse making you look like you pulled it out of grannie’s closet. Don’t you feel so much better with a good, stylish purse? I do! When I get a new one, it seems to add some pep to my step. I think I can conquer the whole world, and stuff it in my purse, too! That’s why I carry small purses!
